Recall
Our project entitled Recall is for us the opportunity to question the link between humanity and the planet Mars.
The observation and exploration of this planet has generated a profusion of images, theories, narratives, and projects, all feeding into an imaginary still under construction. The canals of Schiaparelli or Lowell, the “little green men”, the Martian colonisation in the novels by Kim Stanley Robinson or Ray Bradbury, the Mars One reality television project on the red planet, are some examples of this fantasy of Mars.
The information and pictures sent back to us by space probes and exploration rovers help us assess this territory and make it all the more real. These documents are analysed, and made use of by those wishing to see traces of ancient civilisations, or of creatures akin to the ones living on Earth. Mars is a planet upon which humanity seeks the reflection of the Earth, both past and future. It is a new border, a new New World over which we fantasize.
In their search for a possible colonisation, the scientific teams multiply the simulations, using the Earth as a great playground in which the «as if» become the rule and creating enclaves which duplicate Martian territories.
This fiction of Mars evokes the confusion of the hero of the movie Total Recall, lost between the simulation and the reality. From the beginning of the movie, he keeps reenating images of Mars under the guise of dreams which he perceives as memories.

Notre projet intitulé RECALL est pour nous l’occasion de nous interroger sur le lien qu’entretient l’humanité avec la planète Mars.
L’observation et l’exploration de cette planète ont généré une profusion d’images, de théories, de récits, et de projets qui alimentent un imaginaire toujours en construction. Les canaux de Schiaparelli ou de Lowell, les petits hommes verts, la colonisation martienne des romans de Kim Stanley Robinson ou de Ray Bradbury, le projet de téléréalité de Mars One sur la planète rouge en sont tout autant d’exemples.
Des robots d’exploration arpentent ce territoire et nous le rendent d’autant plus réel par les informations et les images qu’ils nous envoient. Ces documents sont analysés, utilisés par ceux qui veulent y voir des traces de civilisations anciennes, ou des êtres vivants semblables à ceux sur Terre. Mars est une planète sur laquelle l’humanité cherche le reflet de la Terre, passé et futur. C’est une nouvelle frontière, un nouveau Nouveau Monde sur lequel nous fantasmons.
Dans leur recherche pour une possible colonisation, les équipes scientifiques multiplient les simulations, utilisant la Terre comme un terrain de jeu gigantesque dont le “comme si” devient la règle, et créent ainsi des enclaves, doubles de zones martiennes.
